The Flycycle exists and of course it can fly. Come see how it was made, and discover why you've never been told about it before.
Flycycle is an exciting new theatre project, devised by Peter Joucla of Tour De Force. In March 2006 we will explore the project in a week long workshop. Over the next twelve months the piece will be developed ready for a full scale tour in summer 2007. We hope that the piece will frankly address the effect we have on our own environment, drawing on actual scientific research and development to present an exciting vision for the future. Barry Goldman and Peter Joucla’s devised work will approach science with the imagination and possibility that theatre provides – creating a fantastical story based on fact.
Our story begins with a man trapped in a modern city’s pollution and smog, struggling to weave his bicycle through the cars. He dreams of a different way of travelling that would get him out of the tailbacks and traffic jams. He dreams of a way of travelling that would take him above the clouds without damaging the environment.
He trusts his brother with his idea and together they set about making it a reality. As the pedalled powered flying bicycle takes shape the brothers put themselves in serious danger. When they take the Flycycle for secret test flights they attract the attention of a mysterious figure. Are the oil executives worried? And how far will they go to put a stop to the Flycycle?
Join Tour De Force on a voyage of adventure and mystery suitable for all ages from 8 years and up. The production uses physical theatre and puppetry with music and song to create an original dynamic piece of drama. Let the story of the man who builds a flying bicycle inspire you and your family.
Flycycle addresses the issue of climate change in an exciting and optimistic way.
Tour De Force are a well established touring theatre company, who produce productions for large scale tours across Germany, France, Switzerland and the Far East. The Artistic Director of the company, Peter Joucla, has been producing imaginative and innovative theatre for many years. We believe that the issue of looking after our environment is vital, and that this production provides ways into discussion and thought about pollution and sustainable development. After the workshop production in March 2006, we hope that in 2007 the production will go into large outdoor venues, theatres and festivals.
Why do we need to develop Flycycle?
Flycycle has been in planning and development for several years. The story through the changes has remained the same, one person fighting against the system to produce something that could change the world. We need to find the best way to tell this story that unites the underlying themes of science and responsibility to the environment. We believe in theatre for education and entertainment, and it is vital that this story is told in the most vibrant and exciting way possible.
Barry Goldman and Peter Joucla have recently begun working together on this project. Through their discussions pressing questions as to the possibilities Flycycle presents have arisen. Should the piece be told through physical theatre or a combination of theatre and film? The ideas that have come out of this early work are now ready to be put in front of actors. We want to use the idea of recycle throughout all the production values, what can we reuse or reclaim to tell the story?
