Peter Pan is a story about a boy who is frightened of growing up and becoming sensible and dull. Instead he wishes to remain a child, free from all responsibility and care, free to have adventures whenever he pleases. He entices a girl called Wendy to escape from her bedroom one night and fly with him to Neverland, a place constructed from the dreams of children, inhabited by fairies, mermaids, pirates and a bunch of lost boys who yearn to be mothered. Together they have wild adventures until finally Wendy decides it is time to go back home and continue her journey to adulthood.
Many people make the mistake of thinking that the story of Peter Pan is meant only for children, but the book contains a darker, more psychological subtext, which will be explored in our adaptation. Some girls grow up wanting to mother their men and some boys grow up wanting to be mothered by women. J.M.Barrie’s tale of the fantastical adventures that Peter and Wendy have with the likes of Captain Hook and the impudent Tinkerbell is essentially about the painful but inevitable process of growing up, and how all of us have to go through it sooner or later.
